News Writing

As the editor of the Forks Forum, a weekly newspaper on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, I performed all editorial duties, including:

  • Covering and writing news stories for four rural communities
  • Providing photos
  • Editing all content
  • Supervising the work of several freelance reporters
  • Writing a weekly column
  • Updating the newspaper website weekly
  • Working closely with sales, advertising and layout staff
  • Working closely with managing company, located in another city
  • Networking with community leaders and entities in all four communities

 

 

 

Training and Teaching

As a tutor and then the Community Education Coordinator at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Washington, I was responsible for:

 

  • Tutoring students at all levels in reading, writing and math skills.
  • Working as a Parenting Instructor with families on the TANF program, to help parents develop effective job and parenting skills.
  • Guiding students at all levels through basic computer and Internet skills, as well as online learning skills, especially with the Blackboard system.
  • General assistance with all classes and activities in the Forks Extension site.
  • Working as a liaison between Continuing Education instructors and staff.
  • Promoting the Continuing Education department and class to the Port Angeles and Sequim communities.
  • Assisting with the creating and management of Continuing Education classes.

 

As the Distance Learning Coordinator for Peninsula College branches at Clallam Bay and Olympic Corrections Centers, I was responsible for:

  • Designing, developing and implementing the start-up distance education program at both sites
  • Designing course curricula for the program
  • Creating and delivering distance learning classes to student inmates via closed-circuit television broadcasts
  • Working closely with Peninsula College and Department of Corrections personnel to create the necessary structure and support for the program
  • Working closely with inmate students to produce education and informational video programs

 

As an instructor for Digital University, an online professional development website, I was responsible for:

  • Designing and writing an online course in interactive writing
  • Delivering several sessions of this course over a two year period
  • Providing individual instruction to students as needed via email
